San Gabriel CA Real Estate, San Gabriel area and Community Information
San Gabriel, California, is often called the birthplace of the Los Angeles area because it became the area's first township in 1852. Today, the community is home to more than 40,000 residents. "A city with a mission" is San Gabriel's motto. The Los Angeles County community is east of downtown LA and south of Pasadena.

History

The region was originally inhabited by the Tonva people. The Mission San Gabriel Archangel became the fourth of 21 California missions, and it was founded by Father Junipero Serra. In 1801, the future governor of California, Pio Pico, was born and baptized at the mission. When the first census was taken in 1860, San Gabriel's population was 586.

Parks and Recreation

One of the most well-appointed of San Gabriel's parks is Smith Park. It offers a tot lot for kids six and under, along with a children's playground for ages seven and up. The outdoor pool offers a respite from those occasional warm summer days. Lighted basketball courts, lighted handball courts, lighted tennis courts and extensive picnic facilities are all available as well.

Just to the southwest of San Gabriel is the Alhambra Golf Course, a sporty par-70 layout. Although it may measure just 5,212 yards from the back tees, it still offers golfers of all ages and skill levels a challenge. Fairways meander amidst mature trees, bunkers and water hazards. Both juniors and seniors enjoy significant discounts.

The Huntington Botanical Gardens is just north of San Gabriel. The gardens began as a citrus ranch that was purchased by railroad tycoon Henry Edwards Huntington in 1903. When the four-acre lily ponds were opened early on, a heating lining was installed to lengthen the lilies growing season. Today there are a total of eighteen specialty gardens. The Shakespeare Garden features plants referenced in the famous author's work. The three-acre Rose Garden features over 1,800 species. Twenty acres of the original citrus grove has been maintained for over a century.
