Monterey Park CA Real Estate, Monterey Park area and Community Information
Monterey Park, California, is an established community with about 60,000 residents that is 10 miles to the east of downtown Los Angeles. Monterey Park is the home of East Los Angeles College.
The native American Tongva people arrived in the area about 7,000 years prior to the arrival of those of European descent. In the early 1800s, what is today Monterey Park was a part of the Mission San Gabriel Archangel. Alessandro Repetto bought 5,000 acres of land here after the Civil War. He established a ranch, and he built a home on a large hill.
Soon thereafter, Richard Garvey settled in the area as well. He is credited with constructing a dam over 50-feet high across the Hondo River. In 1906, Ramona Acres became the first subdivision in the area. At the same time, nurseries and potato farms were developed across the area.
