Arcadia, California, is conveniently situated along the Foothill Freeway (I-210) in the San Gabriel Valley. The community lies directly east of Pasadena and 13 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, not far from the San Gabriel Mountains that lie just north of town. In 2010, Bloomberg Businessweek named Arcadia to a list of the best places in the country to raise children. Arcadia's population currently stands at about 58,000. It is named after Arcadia, Greece.

History

In 1771, the area was included in the lands of the Spanish Mission San Gabriel Archangel. Over the following century, ownership of the land changed hands a number of times. In 1875, "Lucky" Baldwin, a businessman and land owner, purchased 8,000 acres of the rancho for the sum of $200,000. In 1885, the railroad was routed though the area, and further settlement ensued. Ultimately, the city of Arcadia was incorporated in 1903, and Baldwin became its first mayor.

Parks and Recreation

The Santa Anita Golf Course was built on the site of the Lucky Baldwin Ranch. The par-71, 18-hole layout measures 6,368 yards from the back tees. The USGA course rating is 70.1, and the slope rating is 120. Golfers are treated to dramatic views of the towering San Gabriel Mountains.

Events

The Pink Parlour Arts and Crafts Music Festival Is a June event in Arcadia. The festival celebrates up-and-coming artists while offering numerous kids activities. It is held next to the Westfield Santa Anita Mall at Santa Anita Park.
